The Smith-Waite Tarot Centennial Deck is a close second and I actually carry the tin version of this deck with me wherever I go. The deck celebrates the mixed heritage of the designers (Celtic and Mexican-American), including renaming the court cards with Spanish names and with the landscapes that appear throughout the deck.

In the same way that we see tarot imagery as articulations of archetypes, the plants themselves take on symbolic meanings when relationships are formed and they are carefully observed. It’s important to develop your own relationship with the cards outside of what the deck creator intended. You can recognize a Major Arcana card by its perspective — all the Majors are either altars or mandalas seen from above. Depending on the suit and type of plant, some of the herbs are shown in the act of being prepared or harvested, in use in baths or teas, or in their native environment.

The herbs from the Ace cards in this deck anchor the corners, joined by objects representing each of the elements: feathers for air, shells for water, a candle for fire, and crystals for earth.
